Yes, Gascón, Boudin et al are terrible... but the voters of their respective cities chose them. Krasner easily defeated the effort to recall him in Philadelphia.
I don't think there's much mystery as to why violent crime is skyrocketing in these cities. The interesting question (to me) is why do their voters continue to choose this?
Defund the Police and all it implies, esp the ambient idea that punishing a black person for their crimes makes you complict in structural racism or historical injustice, is Holy Dogma for the modern upscale Leftist.
And while there's a very small chance that you could be killed in a violent crime, there is a very good chance you could experience social death if you publicly question Holy Dogma.
In times of ideological fundamentalist fervor (such as ours), displaying tribal allegiance is always the first factor in every decision.
I guess my question to that would be who cares about “social death” if the people doing the killing are all peckerwoods? There are plenty of alternatives, who wants to hang with idiots in the first place?
Unfortunately, even with much help, appeals to reason, etc. most damaged people cannot escape their troubled minds, and they gradually succomb. These people would rather die than give up their delusions.
Some, yes. However, many people I talk to (I'm a Bay Area resident myself) bemoan our present state of affairs, but don't connect that state of affairs to the policies chosen by the political leadership they voted for. They often talk in the passive voice; things "just happen" in their conception. They discuss human events in the same way you or I might discuss an earthquake or a flood; an act of God over which we have no control.
Yes this disconnect is so baffling and I see it in my area (denver) as well among elites and highly educated people. What they don’t realize is that police may need reform, but eliminating them just creates a gap in the market for others to step in, others who are not subject to regulation or control. And these folks can afford to protect themselves, they don’t stop to think what happens to those who can’t, those they purport to help. “rules for thee but not for me” is how they live and they don’t seem to see a problem with that.
Thomas Sowell once attributed many of our problems to handing over decision making to people who suffer no consequences when they're wrong.
California has the same dynamic: affluent people voting for policies that make them feel virtuous & confer status among their friends and then buying their way out of the consequences of those policies. Power outages? Most people I know have whole-house generators or Power-Walls. Bad schools? Send *your* children to private school. No police? Hire private security. In the aftermath of the past few years' wildfires, wineries in Napa & Sonoma are now purchasing their own fire-fighting equipment & training staff in their use.
Sure, some are true believers who will do whatever mental gymnastics are required for them to rationalize their beliefs.
But not all. Not, I believe, even close to a majority. When it comes to normal people who have kids, jobs, parents & other demands on their attention; who haven't made politics their religion, I think this way of looking at things stems from our broken public discourse, starting with the media.
I agree......... parents are waking up in mass and it's a heartbreaking and eye-opening process........ the media can censor many, but they can't shut down mama bears!
Yes because 99% of democrats DO NOT TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS. Its always someone else's fault or the cruel universe. Moderates and Conservatives have usually been brought up to believe in a higher power and therefore know that there is ALWAYS consequences for ones actions. I dont think I have ever met a libtard that takes accountability for their actions. Until we get back to teaching ethics and morals in this country we are going to continue to fall.
In fairness, Republicans are not accountable either. It's the entire government. The OIG does amazing investigative work, issuing scathing reports: does anyone ever pay any consequences? No. Never. They have no 'skin in the game.' They continue to vote themselves pay raises, and have voted themselves gold-plated retirement packages as well.
Yes... but San Francisco went for Biden 85-31 according to Politico. Mayor Breed won with 70% of the vote in 2019 (Ballotpedia). Seventy-plus percent of San Franciscans are *not* living in gated communities with private security, I assure you :) A significant proportion of these politicians' supporters are taking the consequences of their policies, yet continue to support them, which is what I find interesting.
Now Boudin eked out a 50.8-49.2 victory in a ranked-choice election that seems low-turnout (it's hard for me to tell with the ranked-choice results), but still. Weird.
Some absolutely vote "blue no matter who". And as others have noted in the comments, for a certain demographic the social consequences of being seen by friends or colleagues as "right-wing" or "Republican" is worse than the real-world consequences of voting for these policies (in large part, as you point out, because they don't feel the consequences).
But I've had conversations (private, of course) with people who say "Look, I'm a committed liberal, but this is nuts!" referring to Boudin, or the rolling blackouts, or whatever. Maybe if someone (like, say, the Republican party) were offering something different, they would be interested.
Snicker all you want at the libs; if you live in a place where human feces on the sidewalks is an accepted part of daily life, and you can't get traction as an opposition party... look inward.
I went from being an advocate of gun control in my 20’s to getting a concealed carry permit and owning them and I am not yet 40. (yes, locked in a biometric safe my kids can’t access and stored in a vault which is not in our home when we travel).
Two reasons:
1 - If we are going to defund the police and enable violent criminals, I am going to defend myself and my family. I have no ethical, moral, or legal responsibility to become a hapless victim simply because the woke are giddy about destroying other people’s lives.
2 - Authoritarianism grows most rapidly where the population is unarmed. We’ve tried all kinds of authoritarianism as humans, and it’s far more lethal than the tragic gun violence that accompanies an armed citizenry. In places where the right to bear arms is exercised by law abiding citizens at higher percentages of the population, there is actually less random gun violence - there is better gun safety education within the community and a much bigger deterrent for would be criminals.
This was my arc as well. Grew up in Chicago and followed the standard gun control script, not making the connection. Then moved to Texas with husband and kids and was surrounded by armed neighbors. Lowest crime ever. Now I live in a lake community in South Carolina and it's the same. In the nearest city, gun crime is huge and the mayor is Democrat and the city policy is heavy on gun control. I can forgive myself in my youth for not seeing it but have a hard time with older folks living with the consequences.
After watching half the country metaphorically spit on the police force... I don't think any amount of money thrown at them will bring them back. They don't have short memories; they know how many feel about them and I absolutely can not blame them for wanting to put themselves in harm's way. The "summer of love" (as Seattle's mayor put it) destroyed this country on a certain level and it showed the bad guys that they can walk all over the rest of us without repercussions. Good luck putting the genie back in the bottle.
Good on you for choosing to arm yourself for defense, however, you may want to rethink having it locked away in a safe. If the moment were to ever come when you need it, retrieving it from a safe may be impractical.
They are quick release biometric safes that immediately pop open with my finger and are strategically located around the house (we hired a private firearms instructor who helped us with in home placement and safe options). We take them offsite when we leave for extended periods of time because we travel to places like the Caribbean and Appalachian Mountains where cell service is spotty. If someone were to remove the small biometric safes from our house, which would be destructive to our house but not all that difficult, they might be able to get the guns out without us getting the GPS security alerts the safe is being moved/ tampered with.
Thank you for the suggestion. We are new to the handgun world and would rather here something over and over than not hear it at all.
I think this is hilarious! All of us who are moderates and conservatives told the libtards this was going to happen. Whats sad is you notice that the rich communities started hiring their own security firms AFTER they were part of the defund police movement and were voting to take away our guns. ,and after they pushed for DA's that are lite on crime and dont set bail . See they dont even think about regular people and neighborhoods that have also been affected worse than their neighborhoods except the regular people cannot afford private security! So they/ we are left to suffer the consequences of their short sided, stupid decisions like defund the police! Also, if you just do your research you will see that most violent crimes and shootings happen in cities and counties that are anti-gun and have banned law abiding citizens from carrying or made it stupidly difficult to acquire a carry permit. This is because BAD GUYS DONT TURN IN THEIR GUNS AND OBTAIN THEM THROUGH ILLEGAL MEANS! All you dumb butts have done is disarm the law abiding people which ironically are the ones who would also defend you and your home. Wake up libtards. Your policies dont work and you have successfully disarmed yourselves and are now at the mercy of criminals. CONGRATULATIONS!!! You shall reap what you sow!
Buy a gun, keep it locked & loaded. Keep it on you at all times. California is a dystopian hell hole that the people there allowed, nay created by voting for liberal idiots. You reap what you sow. The smart ones have left the state.
Ha, ha, democrats are such hypocrites. But to hell with you. The entire country has been destroyed because of your unAmerican evil ways. Go take your RNA booster injections and die.
You have to laugh about the Beverly Hills busybody Markowitz getting rid of the police chief because they were "mean"... only to have to turn around and organize a neighborhood watch group because violent crime has gotten so bad in her neighborhood. Karma.
This article warms my heart. Just what I needed on a cold December morning. The prospect of liberals learning from experience gives me hope for the future.
This anti-gun mom should stick by her principles. In her mind guns kill people. She should not be allowed to have such a dangerous weapon in her possession. She voted for the problems she is now experiencing. Maybe just maybe, she should live with the consequences of her decisions and her votes.
That's too bad. We need these globalist-elites to get a taste of their own medicine. They unleashed black thuggery on basis of BLM lies and destroyed so many communities, but now, they are arming themselves and ramping up POLICE power. What is this? Defund the police for the hoi polloi but fund the police to defend the rich?
No, let's keep on with the 'progressive' policies and ship all the black thugs to these fancy areas.

Yes, that’s a good description. That passive thing you describe protects their egos
I think you and Gordon are actually saying the same thing.
Sure, some are true believers who will do whatever mental gymnastics are required for them to rationalize their beliefs.

"Why do those stupid people vote against their own interests?" Every side can ask this question of the other. But, it's a real phenomenon!
Some absolutely vote "blue no matter who". Very well thought out. You’ve gone about gun ownership in a responsible manner and I commend you for that.
Mugged by reality were ya? ;-)
I love your second point. Couldn't agree more.

What many don't seem to get is this is precisely what the 'Order from Chaos' crowd NEEDS!
Oh, the tangled webs Progressives weave...
Cue the world's smallest violin
Buy a gun, keep it locked & loaded. Keep it on you at all times. California is a dystopian hell hole that the people there allowed, nay created by voting for liberal idiots. You reap what you sow. The smart ones have left the state.
These people made this wine. Let them drink fully their desire. No sympathy for any of them from me. At all
Ha, ha, democrats are such hypocrites. But to hell with you. The entire country has been destroyed because of your unAmerican evil ways. Go take your RNA booster injections and die.
Voting won't end the criminal surge. Only by catching these vermin and putting them against a wall will.
You have to laugh about the Beverly Hills busybody Markowitz getting rid of the police chief because they were "mean"... only to have to turn around and organize a neighborhood watch group because violent crime has gotten so bad in her neighborhood. Karma.
A conservative is a liberal who has bee mugged. Beverly Hills is getting mugged.
This article warms my heart. Just what I needed on a cold December morning. The prospect of liberals learning from experience gives me hope for the future.
Zero fucks given for these people. They’ve helped to create the nightmare they live in. Suck it up, progtards.
This anti-gun mom should stick by her principles. In her mind guns kill people. She should not be allowed to have such a dangerous weapon in her possession. She voted for the problems she is now experiencing. Maybe just maybe, she should live with the consequences of her decisions and her votes.
Is schadenfreude unkind in this instance?
A burnt hand teaches best.
Elections have consequences - Wake up!
