Remove Silicon Valley and California's economy is nowhere near that level. Remove Big Tech from Silicon Valley and you're removing about 33% of that sector. Silicon Valley grew because the state was once a Golden Land to start up businesses and do research. It is neither of those today, but Silicon Valley is too firmly entrenched to easily move (though some are). The California of today would never attract a fledgling industry as it once did on a regular basis. Those who can are leaving. Those who cannot live with the crap. Those who make excuses for the crap need to own it. Michael Shellenberger has the guts to look at his worldview and see what was right and what was empirically wrong. If you're living around thousands of homeless, thousands of illegal immigrants, school results that would not be accepted anywhere else on earth, a government planned energy shortage, and crime so bad that mass shoplifting is the norm- and you accept all of it as 'better than Conservatives'- you are the problem. Objectively- it's not better than anything. It's a failed society. Either get with changes to improve or get out of the way of those with the guts to do it.
My word. You are proud of yourself, aren't you? You're one of those who look down on the rest of civilization that brings everything to your door, as you drive away in your electric car powered by your overpriced solar panels and under-efficient battery power storage. How do you think the rest of the world gets your pleasurable things to you?
When they get to the point of finding a renewable source that can actually power a city without having to take up a city-sized piece of land covered in solar panels, when they can produce electric cars that most people- not just the 1%- can afford, when they can produce enough energy out of solar panels to power a subdivision, let alone a city the size of metro Detroit, or Chicago, LA, San Francisco, you let me know. And when the solar panels cease to produce enough energy in the northern low-sun, snow belt states, what do those people do?
And those chargers that will be needed across all of the highways around the country, where will the electricity come from for those? You live in a dream world. Put aside your virtue signaling about how 'good' you are, how much better a person you are, and grab hold of reality. You are not living in the real world.
All of us- every one of us would love to see a renewable clean source of energy. And we can continue to work toward it. (Actually- nuclear is here now and ready to be used. But...California has banned that as well.) But until we have a workable source that is affordable for the masses, efficient in producing energy, lower cost than current offerings, can be produced readily, and would not require destroying our surroundings to use it (as solar would do), then we have to keep looking. But to just cut off oil and gas that runs the entire world to make a handful of people like you feel better about yourselves, well...that just borders on insane. Fine that you will troll me and this substack. But you need to seriously look at your own small world. Put down the mirror that holds your gaze and give a serious look to the world at large. Not through the eyes of an activist. But through the eyes of someone who sees objectively.
Sir, do you live in a hole? Half of the houses on my street have solar panels. Four friends bought EVs after driving mine, and several more are now deciding which one to get. And all of them are solar powered. My little system powers my entire household and most of both electric cars.
Your need to offend others is typical of losers. You have to attack those who are smarter than you are and who are less overcome with political prejudice. Every time you go gas up or get oil changes or emissions checks or any engine or transmission maintenance at all, remember me, the guy who makes his own motor fuel and does not pollute like you do.
If you want to discuss the real issues, I have a Master of Science in Energy and the Environment, as well as experience as a senior engineer for PG&E.
We can discuss Anthropogenic Global Warming. Start by looking up Ocean Acidification.
"Half of the houses on my street have solar panels." Exactly. Your worldview is your block, your area of shopping/dining. Those around you all in various levels of virtue signal competition. You are in the least position to make decisions about anyone else, let alone our civilization. Despite your degrees, you appear to simply not know enough- not of history, not of economics, and perhaps not enough about energy. As for climate science, it's anything but a closed topic. As a science man you should recognize that. Shut it down and go read something other than those things that praise you for your current mentality. Push your intellect just a little. Then, go back outside and admire your solar panels if you need. Thanks for your credentials. You are a living stereotype. Don't try so hard. Look- I don't want to get into arguments in Substack. I should not have initially engaged with you. My mistake. This is a time suck now- for both of us. And I hate time sucks. I'm done here.
The science is settled, and with the melting of the permafrost, we are doomed.
I took the hard classes while you were doing art or business or something easy. I used most of my life solving technical problems for others. This is my field. You have no chance of winning any argument here.
Heh. Love your attitude. On this at least we can agree: We are indeed doomed. But not for the reasons you think. With that said, given our time is short, go live your life. Be happy. Be safe.

I was an electronics engineer there 1972-74.
I like your jealousy.
Not surprisingly, you think too much of yourself. It is a common trait I see in many of you.
Go hate somewhere else.
Thanks.
It’s not hate. You peddle in nonsense. Someone calls you on it and you start the name-calling and accusations. Have a good life.
I do. Our two electric cars are powered by our clean PV system on the roof, and we live cleanly. Do you still have to go out to gas up and pay?
